The easy and artful way to expose your feline friends to essential oils!

I developed this technique after observing my outdoor cats using pine needles as their “litter box.”  I began to realize all of the wonderful ways that animals would naturally expose themselves to essential oils in the “wild,” and Litteroma was born.  Litteroma is possibly one of the easiest methods in which to expose cats to the health benefits of essential oils.  It not only replaces the toxic fragrances found in commercial kitty litter, but offers a way to provide preventive and continued health benefits from essential oils on a regular basis.

Start with unscented kitty litter – staying within the same brand that you currently use is often advisable.  Add 1-3 drops of your chosen animalEO essential oil single or blend to 1 cup of baking soda – store this mixture within a glass jar, and allow it to “marinade” and blend overnight, shaking the mixture several times.  Later, you may find you can add more essential oil drops to this recipe.  Starting with a small portion (maybe 1 Tablespoon) – sprinkle the baking soda mixture onto your kitty litter.  Mix well.  Provide a separate litter box that does not contain essential oils, to make sure that your cat does not have an aversion to the essential oil that was selected.  Once you are sure your cat is using the litter box with your oil selection and concentration, you can then omit the use of the “plain” litter box.  Each time you scoop, you can sprinkle a bit more Litteroma into your box to freshen it up!

Ingredients: Essential Oils of Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis), Frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), Juniper (Juniperus communis), Ledum (Ledum groenlandicum), May Chang (Litsea cubeba), Helichrysum (H. italicum), Melissa (Melissa officinalis), Myrtle (Myrtus communis), Valerian (Valerian officinalis), Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides), Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Litteroma KidneyCat:

Loaded with oils that help support the Renal (Kidneys) and Urologic Systems.  Litteroma KidneyCat is perfect support for cats with a diagnosis of Kidney disease, Urinary issues, Kidney or Bladder stones and crystals, Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder (FLUTD), and more.  Juniper has long been used to support the Kidneys and urinary tract – and has been reported to enhance glomerular filtration, Copaiba supports the resolution of inflammation that is so common in every disorder, Frankincense magnifies other oils as well as is researched for anti-tumor properties.  Grapefruit supports and balances normal fluid movement and diuresis, however is not over active for those cats who are already urinating too much.  Laurus nobilis is known as a Liver and Kidney tonic.  Marjoram can aid with muscle spasm in the urinary tract, German Chamomile is noted for help with urinary stones and ureter inflammation, Geranium also has balancing diuretic properties while supporting emotions and normal hemostasis (blood clotting).  Cedarwood is antiseptic and diuretic in action, and has been known to be beneficial in the treatment of kidney and bladder disorders – especially infections and cystitis.  Rosemary Verbenone Chemotype is a milder form of Rosemary but still carries Rosemary’s benefits of aiding in the elimination from Kidneys as well as balancing diuresis and circulation support.  Fennel has been used traditionally to treat high uric acid levels and stones along with general bladder irritation.  Helichrysum (again as my favorite oil) lends its many healing properties, and finally Catnip, as mentioned above.

Ingredients: Essential Oils of Juniper (Juniperus communis), Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis), Frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), Laurus nobilis, Marjoram (Origanum majorana), German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Rosemary-V (Rosmarinus officinalis Verbenone Chemotype), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Helichrysum (H. italicum), Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Litteroma LiverCat:

Part of the Litteroma series – LiverCat provides additional support for those cats who need additional support for their liver and structures related to the Hepatic System (Gall Bladder, etc…) A wonderful and easy way to layer additional benefits to your existing health regimen!

Essential oils that support the Liver are key in this blend.  In our veterinary hospital, we have noted Helichrysum to support the Liver and help to return abnormal liver values to more normal ranges.  Ledum has long been used for Liver support.  Geranium is known for supporting normal hemostasis (blood clotting) which can be compromised with Liver disease, as well as for the treatment of jaundice, gall stones, and other issues that surround Liver function and health.  Laurus nobilis is known as a Liver and Kidney tonic.  Rosemary Verbenone Chemotype is a milder form of Rosemary but still carries Rosemary’s benefits of aiding in the elimination from the Liver and with gall bladder inflammation.  Carrot Seed (please see the comments regarding Carrot Seed on our Pregnant & Breeding Page) has been known to aid in balancing cholesterol levels, increase red blood cells, aid in weakness and exhaustion, purify the blood, detoxify the liver, and many other actions.  Frankincense lends magnifying properties to other oils, while hopefully providing some of the anti-cancer benefits that are so hotly researched.  Lavender has so many actions, it is impossible to list them all – however for LiverCat eliminating stress, balancing the entire body, and basically being “good for everything” – fits accurately!  Spearmint has often been indicated to ease nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and all sorts of digestive issues that are common with Liver disease, but also is likely to be Hepatoprotective as it has been shown to increase Glutathione S-transferase levels.  Used in the correct ratios, cats really enjoy Spearmint – but if overwhelming – they are not as likely to gather the many benefits.  German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile also fit into the Hepatoprotective category by increasing Glutathione S-transferase along with Celery Seed and Fennel.  Catnip is likewise included in LiverCat in small quantities, as encouragement for cats to “use the box”.

Ingredients: Essential Oils of Helichrysum (H. italicum), Ledum (Ledum groenlandicum), Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis), Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), Laurus nobilis, Rosemary-V (Rosmarinus officinalis), Carrot Seed (Daucus carota), Frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Spearmint (Mentha spicata), German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis), Celery Seed (Apium graveolens), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Goe blend supports conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.  Copaiba provides additional aid to inflammatory conditions, Frankincense magnifies other oils while contributing properties that are supportive for cancerous conditions, Helichrysum again adds its amazing healing benefits, and Spruce not only provides a wonderful fresh scent to the litter, but provides support for those conditions that typically would be treated with traditional steroids.

Litteroma SugerCat:

SugarCat supports normal sugar balance and handling – and is very appropriate for support of diabetic cats. Copaiba and Frankincense magnify other essential oils while helping to reduce inflammation and alleviate stress. Geranium is an ideal oil for creating homeostasis in the body, stimulates healthy adrenocortical gland function and hormone balance – and has been reported to have great support for diabetes. Geranium has also been reported to aid in neural based pain, which can occur with diabetes. Myrtle helps to balance the Thyroid and can aid in urinary issues that can be common when glucose is passed into the urine, while it also has been reported to decrease blood glucose. Black Cumin is up and coming in the essential oil world – and should not be ignored. Thymoquinone contained within Black Cumin oil has an amazing amount of research – such as THIS. Lemongrass has often been recommended to support bladder infections that can be common with diabetes (due to glucose in the urine) and is also reported to increase glucose tolerance and decrease plasma insulin. Coriander Seed supports the Liver and has also been reported to aid with digestive issues and appetite. Myrrh is supportive of the Thyroid and as all of the endocrine system functions together – is important in balancing the body’s hormones as a whole. Ylang Ylang is often thought of as a balancing essential oil, good for blood pressure and is also used by diabetics to balance their system. Nutmeg is reported to aid in hypertension and also is hepatoprotective – both important in support sugar handling as a whole. German Chamomile has many attributes, supporting the liver and gall bladder as well as normal cholesterol levels. Spearmint has often been indicated to ease nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and all sorts of digestive issues, but also is likely to be Hepatoprotective as it has been shown to increase Glutathione S-transferase levels.
